Unstructured Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
-- Joyce Kilmer

Axel Erlandson was a man who not only saw the poetry in trees, but who was able to participate in that poetry to create something the likes of which exist nowhere else.

With inhumane patience, he took ordinary trees and shaped them into works of sculpture. Although Erlandson passed away in 1964, his "arborsculptures" can still be visited at Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy, California. Here's some samples of his work.

Unstructured Calories

I have decided to embark on a diet and exercise program. As someone whose been around others who are dieting, I know how tedious dieters can get about their routine. With that in mind, I will spare you, my loyal readers, that. I did, however, find one thing that's sufficiently cool that I think even non-dieters will enjoy it.

"What Does 200 Calories Look Like", from the WiseGeek site, is a series of pictures of 200 calories worth of various foods ranging from a huge bunch of celery stalks down to a pat of butter. It's rather fascinating to see the comparisons.
